School Closure - March 13, 2020
March 13, 2020
Tiffany Park Families:
By now you are aware that all Renton School District schools will be closed beginning Monday, March 16 through Friday, April 24 in response to the directive from Washington State Governor Jay Inslee. I hope that the information included in this email is helpful as we prepare for this extended school closure.
For students who are absent, families can pick up the learning resources outlined below in the main office beginning at 1:30 pm today until 4:00 pm. The office will also be open on Monday, March 16 from 8:00 am until 3:30 pm.
Meal Services
Beginning Tuesday, March 17, 2020, meals will be available for any child, ages 1-18, in the front lot of each Renton School from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. daily during the school week. We are committed to providing access to meals to help ensure that all students’ nutritional needs are met during the closure.
Meals are “grab and go” - Students will not stay on-site to eat; meals are intended to be taken off campus and can be picked up through car windows.
Additionally, meals will be available at the following locations daily from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. daily:
· Green Tree/Park Hill, 6900 S 125th St, Seattle
· Creston Point, 13445 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Seattle
· Royal Hills, 3000 Royal Hills Dr SE, Renton
· Stonebrook, 12210 SE Petrovitsky Rd, Renton
Learning During the Closure
Renton School District has provided resources for at-home learning during our closure. We are committed to providing equitable learning experiences for our students. The resources provided are intended to support skill maintenance and development. Paper copies of the learning resources were distributed to students at all schools on Friday, March 13 and directions are posted on the district website page for students and families. Additional copies will also be available at schools during meal service. In addition, teachers at Tiffany Park will be sending all students home with books to support reading during this extended closure. All books should be returned when school resumes.
Information from our Librarian: Renton Teacher-Librarians have been working hard to find ways to support our students during the time away from school. Tiffany Park students that had library today
(Friday) were able to check out extra books, and those that did not have library today were invited to come during the day or until 3:30 after school to check out additional books.
Further, students may access online books from the King County Library System in a variety of ways. The librarian at Sartori made two videos explaining how to access these books – they are linked below. All Tiffany Park students already have a special student library card issued from KCLS. Fourth and fifth grade students practiced using KCLS a few weeks ago, but it is available to all students. Keep Reading!
Also, check out the Tiffany Park Library catalog for links to databases that are paid for by the Renton School District!

Student Medications
Student medications may be picked up by authorized family members on Friday, March 13 or Monday, March 16 during regular school hours. Medication not picked up by 3:30 pm on Monday, March 16 will no longer be available to families.
Report Cards and State Testing
Today is the final day of the 2nd trimester. Teachers will continue to work on report cards and a plan for report card distribution will be communicated to families.
OSPI is cancelling all state testing for the 2019-2020 school year. This includes the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA), the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS), the Washington Access to Instruction and Measurement (WA-AIM), and WIDA Alternate ACCESS for English learners.

Tiffany Park Families,
We hope your family is staying safe and healthy. As we begin our second week with school closed, we acknowledge this is an extremely challenging time and the staff at Tiffany Park remains committed to our students and families. Information will also be updated regularly on the Tiffany Park and Renton School District websites.
Families who need support or assistance in navigating resources are encouraged to reach out to our building administrators, family liaison, or school counselor (contact information below). Additionally, Renton School District has created a page on their website that includes links for families in need of assistance with food, health care, rent, and utility bills. There is also an option to donate and help others in need. Please visit the RSD Students & Families page to for more information.
Breakfast and Lunch Programs: Meals are being served to any child, ages 1-18, in the front parking lot and the Royal Hills Apartment Complex from 11 am to 12 pm Monday through Friday. To assist with planning, families have been asked to pre-order their meals. Orders must be placed before 8 pm the night before. Extra meals will be available for those who were not able to order.
Staff members at Tiffany Park miss their students and have created a rotation to assist with lunches. You can look forward to seeing some familiar faces out in front of the school during the lunch hour.
In-Home Learning Resources
Beginning this Friday, March 27th, in-home learning activities will be posted on the Tiffany Park website. A new page titled, In-Home Learning, has been added under the For Families tab. Click the TPE In-Home Learning page to visit. Grade level teacher teams are working on creating and selecting activities that will be posted each week. There will be a teacher message and at least three activities in the following subjects: Literacy (Reading and Writing), Mathematics, and team choice (Science, Social Studies, etc.). The intention of providing these activities is about maintenance of skills and remaining connected to school. These activities are not assignments and will not be used for grading purposes. Activities are intended to be a support and we do not want to overwhelm families with too many activities or resources. If you are interested in additional activities beyond what is posted, please reach out to your child’s teacher directly.
New activities will be posted to the website on the following dates: 3/27, 4/3, 4/17 and 4/24. Activities posted on 4/3 are for the week of 4/13-4/17 because the week of 4/6-4/10 is Spring Break.
Report Cards: Report cards were printed and stuffed into envelopes this morning. They are making their way to the post office and should arrive at your homes by the end of the week.

Tiffany Park Families:
I would like to share our weekly update as our third week of school closure comes to an end. Just a reminder that next week is our regularly scheduled Spring Break so teachers will not be working. However, the TPE staff planned a fun activity before we go on break.
Staff Parade – April 3rd starting at 1:00 pm
We miss you and we’re coming to see you! This Friday, April 3, Tiffany Park teachers and staff will be parading through the local neighborhoods to wave to our students and their families. We will be remaining in our cars to follow the social distancing protocol. Students and families are encouraged to come outside and wave. Please be sure to follow social distancing guidelines as well. The parade will begin at 1:00 pm and we will visit the neighborhoods numbered in the map below. The numbers show the order of neighborhoods that our parade will follow. For detailed routes of each neighborhood, please our TPE webpage: https://tiffanypark.rentonschools.us/
In-Home Learning Activities
Thank you to everyone who has visited our TPE In-Home Learning. Remember that new activities are posted each Friday for the next week. Activities posted on 4/3 are intended for the week of 4/13 – 4/17 because next week is Spring Break. If you are interested in additional activities beyond what is posted, please reach out to your child’s teacher directly.
Chromebook Distribution Information
Chromebooks are being distributed to families on Tuesday, April 7th between 1 and 3 pm at Tiffany Park Elementary.
How:
We’ll set up a drive-through process, much like meal distribution
What to bring:
● A pen! You’ll sign one small form
What you’ll get:
● Chromebook and charger
● Directions for logging in, other helpful info for using the Chromebook
● A quick smile and hello from the team at Tiffany Park
Are you in need of a device but haven’t registered for a Chromebook yet? That’s okay! Visit TPE on Tuesday, April 7th between 1 and 3 pm and we can assist.
*Due to our limited inventory, we'll have to limit to one computer per family and prioritize families without a computer in the home.
Meal Distribution Over Break
Meals will continue to be provided during Spring Break (April 6 – April 10).
Principal Lesco on Leave
My wife and I are blessed to be welcoming a daughter to our family. I will be on paternity leave from 4/13 through 4/24. I will keep families updated if dates change.
During my leave, Mrs. Ramsey will be the primary contact and will assume all communication responsibilities. Please contact Mrs. Ramsey at genevieve.ramsey@rentonschools.us if you need support during my leave.

Dear Tiffany Park Families,
You have likely heard the news that we will not be returning to school in the physical sense this year. We are saddened and disappointed to know that we will not gather again in classrooms, the playground, or other parts of our school building. We believe in the strength of our community and we are confident we will be able to connect in new ways during this time. In addition to the activities being provided by grade-levels teams, we will provide a website where you can access read alouds done by Tiffany Park Staff members (including me) and our school will continue to reach out to your student(s) in multiple ways.
In light of the Governor’s extension of the school closure, I wanted to share the work that is underway at Tiffany Park and across Renton Schools to support continued learning.
Important updates:
· In order to ensure that Tiffany Park students have access to electronic devices, we loaned 50 Chromebooks to our families this week and anticipate distributing approximately 50 additional devices next week. Please read all communication from Tiffany Park Elementary carefully as information will be coming about future opportunities for Chromebook check-out.
· We are increasing the learning expectations compared to prior weeks. Beginning on April 17th, we will provide daily learning activities in Math, Literacy and Science/Social Studies (alternating). Please check our In-Home Learning web page every Friday!
· Teachers are reaching out to connect with families/students on a weekly basis, and I encourage families to collaborate with teachers to determine the best balance of expectations for their students.
· We are working individually with families of students who receive special services (Special Education and ELL) to serve their identified needs.
· We are continuing to refine our plan using the feedback we’re receiving from families. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher and/or me if there are ways we can support you and your family.
· As we anticipate returning to school in the fall, we recognize concerns about skill gaps and readiness for the next grade level. We are committed to assessing students in Math and Literacy once we return, in order to adjust curricular pacing guides and prioritize learning standards.
Please remember that Principal Lesco will be out on paternity leave and is scheduled to return on April 27th. During the leave, I will be the primary point of contact.
We are thinking of you all and hope to see you soon. In the meantime, stay healthy and take care of yourself and your family.
Thanks,
Genevieve Ramsey and Steve Lesco

Dear Tiffany Park Families,
As April comes to a close, we are thinking of our students and our families as we all continue to adjust to life and school at home. We hope you have been able to access our in-home learning activities in a way that works for your family and that the activities have been meaningful and relevant for your students. Teachers are pursuing new technologies and ways of organizing activities to support your student’s independent engagement. In some grade levels you will meet teachers from other buildings as our teachers are collaborating across schools! Remember to access learning activities from our music and PE teachers, librarians. There are also additional supports available for students needing these supports (reading, ELL, special education). Teachers are available to help support your family in accessing these materials.
Other Important updates:
· Teachers will continue to reach out to connect with families/students on a weekly basis in the manner that best meets your needs. Let your teachers know how you are engaging in continuous learning and what you are doing at home. Per OSPI guidance, we are beginning to track student engagement and our teachers would love to hear from you about what you are using and what is helpful!
· Information regarding grading was communicated to families on Thursday. Students will receive an NA (not assessed) for their third quarter grades. Reach out to your student’s teacher if you would like feedback on their current progress or work. All students will move onto the next grade level unless a parent would like to pursue retention.
· We still have some Chromebooks available for families that need them. If your family needs a device please email genevieve.ramsey@rentonschools.us or your child’s teacher to request one. We will continue to prioritize families without a device for their elementary school students but may have enough inventory to provide families with multiple children an additional device.
· We have cancelled our in-person kindergarten countdown but we will be holding two virtual kindergarten countdowns later in May, one during the day and one in the evening. Anyone wishing to register their student for kindergarten should email Sydney.bensen@rentonschools.us.
· We are continuing to refine our plan using the feedback we’re receiving from families. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher and/or me if there are ways we can support you and your family. Mr. Lesco will be returning from paternity leave next week. Please direct any communication directly to either of us – steven.lesco@rentonschools.us or genevieve.ramsey@rentonschools.us
Last week I shared that beloved former principal Irene Olson passed away. Here is a link to her obituary. In addition, her family has set up a scholarship fund to support graduating Renton School District seniors interested in pursuing education. A donation to that scholarship fund can be made here. Please enter the name of the fund, Irene Olson Memorial Scholarship.
We are available if you have any questions, concerns, or needs. Please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Thanks,
Genevieve Ramsey and Steve Lesco

Tiffany Park Families,
We are wrapping up a long period of distance learning as weeks became months but June has finally arrived.
At Tiffany Park, we have been engaged in equity work and professional development. The work is ongoing and has largely focused on culturally responsive teaching practices and developing deeper personal awareness as it relates to race and culture. The school closure has brought equity to the forefront of conversations and our staff has sought to develop strategies to keep students feeling connected and to provide access to learning.
As a community, we continue to grow more diverse. This strengthens our school as we more closely reflect the world our young students will one day lead. However, there has been a series of events in our country that have threatened the collective foundation that makes our community strong. During this time, we want nothing more than to be able to be physically present for our students.
The school closure and recent incidents are why our building remains committed to raising awareness for racial equity and inclusion and helping students develop a sense of belonging to gain appreciation for all as we continue to advance our Tiffany Park mission:
At Tiffany Park we aspire to have an inclusive school community where all students feel connected and thrive academically and socially.
Weekly Connection:
Last week our padlet theme was Blue Skies & Shades! We’ve enjoyed some blue skies to close out this week and you can still add a picture to this padlet. For this week our theme is Rainbow Day. Take a picture of your family wearing as much of your favorite color as possible.
End of the Year Schedule:
The last day of school is June 19th. The final week of learning activities will be available Friday, June 15th. Your teachers will also be planning classroom-based end of the year activities.
Material Collection and Distribution:
During the last week of school, we will offer three days for students and families to drop off materials that were sent home prior to the building closure and pick up personal belongings. Chromebooks will not be collected during this time.
Using a drive-through process similar to Chromebook distribution, we will be collecting all borrowed materials (teacher books, library books, etc.) and passing out student belongings. The collection and distribution will take place during the following dates/times:
· Monday, June 15: 9:00 am – 11:00am and 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm
· Tuesday, June 16: 9:00am – 11:00am and 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm
· Wednesday, June 17: 9:00am – 11:00am and 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm
We kindly ask that families begin to gather materials that were sent home prior to the building closure and plan to return materials during one of the drop-off/pick-up windows.
If families are unable to come during one of the windows, please consider having a friend or neighbor drop-off and pick-up materials. If that is not an option, please contact Steve Lesco or Genevieve Ramsey.
New Playground:
When students return to school, they will be greeted by a new playground structure. Demolition begins next week and the project should be completed by August.
We are available if you have any questions, concerns, or needs. Please do not hesitate to reach out.
Thanks,
Steve Lesco and Genevieve Ramsey

Tiffany Park Families,
We have two weeks remaining before we close this school year. These past weeks have been emotional, and we hope that the resources provided from administration and teachers have been helpful for families as they have engaged in conversations about race and racism. We also hope that class meetings this week have been helpful for students to share and process their feelings with their classmates and teacher. Additionally, school counselors around the district have created a series of lessons that serve as another resource. They can be found on our In-Home Learning page or accessed by clicking SEL Resources.
Over the last two weeks of school you will see that our grade level learning activities will begin to focus on reflecting on learning and closure with their now-virtual class. Below are details regarding wrapping up this school year. There has been a slight change to the student-materials pick-up/drop-off to review below.
Collect Student Materials/Drop-off School Materials:
· Monday, June 15: 9:00 am – 11:00am and 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm
· Tuesday, June 16: 9:00am – 11:00am and 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm
· Wednesday, June 17: 9:00am – 11:00am
There is no longer a collection/drop-off on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 17th. Instead, families have the opportunity to wave a final good-bye to their teachers on Wednesday, June 17th from 1:00-2:00.
Chromebook Return:
In order to continue to provide access to in-home learning materials over the summer, Renton School District students grade K-5 may keep their Chromebooks over the summer. In the fall when we’re back in person, we’ll coordinate how students can return the technology to the school.
· 5TH GRADE STUDENTS: We will coordinate collection at their middle school in early fall and provide the new 6th grader with a new Chromebook. All incoming 6th grade students will receive a new Chromebook for their middle school career. Dates and information on that process will come from middle school principals closer to the start of the school year.
· LEAVING RENTON: The only students needing to return a Chromebook will be those who are leaving the school district. Additionally, any family who does not want to continue to have the Chromebook at home over the summer may return the device to the school during one of the drop-off windows listed above.
During the summer, families may receive alerts from our monitoring software if their student has searched for materials which may indicate a self-harm concern. These alerts are meant to provide a family the resources to begin a conversation to address any potential health concerns. Additionally, you can reach out your personal health provider for resources or Crisis Connection: 1-866-427-4747 or Teen Link: 1-866-833-6546
End of Year and Medication:
Since we are still encouraged to Stay Home, Stay Healthy and Stay Vaccinated, we are happy to keep your student’s medication at school over the summer. If your student is moving to a different Renton School District school in the fall, we will get the medication to the new school.
In the fall, you will need to provide new medication orders from the health care provider. If your student’s medication expires before school starts, you will also need to provide unexpired medication. If you want to pick up your student’s medication in June, you are able to during one of the times listed above.
Summer Learning Opportunities:
We are planning to offer several summer learning opportunities. Tiffany Park will offer a “Summer Adventure” from August 10th – 21st for 2.5 hours. Specific times will be determined in the next weeks. This program will serve between 9 and 18 students at each grade level and will be by invitation only. The “Summer Adventure” will provide an opportunity to address learning needs in reading, writing, and math that have occurred due to distance learning. Although this opportunity is by school invitation, please let your classroom teacher know if you are interested.
Our district will also provide digital learning opportunities in reading and math via the digital platform i-Ready for all Renton School District students. More details coming soon!
We wish everyone well as we approach these final days of the 19-20 school year,
Steve Lesco and Genevieve Ramsey

Tiffany Park Families,
We have almost made it to the end of a school year unlike any other. We look forward to seeing many of you for our final farewell on Wednesday. Looking ahead to next year, we are optimistic that we will be in physical school in some capacity. We are encouraging our teachers to disconnect and restore themselves over the summer, so they are ready to hopefully welcome students back to the building in September.
Collection and Drop-off of Materials
Please plan to come by Tiffany Park to drop of materials that were sent home prior to the building closure and pick up personal belongings.
In the fall when we are back in person, we will coordinate how students can return the technology to the school.
- LEAVING RENTON: The only students needing to return a Chromebook will be those who are leaving the school district. Additionally, any family who does not want to continue to have the Chromebook at home over the summer may return the device to the school during one of the drop-off windows listed above.
- 5TH GRADE STUDENTS: We will coordinate collection at their middle school in early fall and provide the new 6th grader with a new Chromebook. All incoming 6th grade students will receive a new Chromebook for their middle school career. Dates and information on that process will come from middle school principals closer to the start of the school year.
RSD Family Survey: Your Help in Planning for Next Year
Renton School District has created a 100-member steering committee and work groups to review these options for the 2020-2021 school year. Families are invited to assist with this process by providing feedback about their experience with in-home learning during the past three months. As we continue efforts to plan for the fall, we are eager to incorporate feedback from our community regarding their current experiences and desires moving forward. Please take a moment to contribute your voice through this survey! The survey will be open through Tuesday, June 16.
The State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Chris Reykdal, communicated the priority of returning to physical school for the 2020-2021 school year. Many of the details depends on current health conditions. Please stay connected throughout the summer regarding communication of any changes to schools.

Tiffany Park Families:
Happy Juneteenth! We have reached our final day of school. It was great to see so many people at our end of the year wave-off. Not everyone was able to make it though, so we also created a digital goodbye.
While we do not yet know what school will look like at the start of next school year, we do know is that it will be different than school as we have known it. Expect updates from the District during the summer months.
Collect Student Materials/Drop-off School Materials
Thank you to families who dropped off and collected materials during our windows last week. Given the number of materials still at school, we will have one final window on Monday, June 21st from 5:00 – 6:00 pm. After that time, you will not be able to collect student materials. If you are unable to make it during that time, please try to make arrangements with a friend or neighbor. We will share details on how to return schoolbooks, library books, and Chromebooks in August.
